Linux 4.0.x on Intel Edison

Linux 4.1 have been officially released, so rather than continuing down along this path, focus have been moved to vanilla Linux kernel

As described on this page it is possible to boot the Intel® Edison using a vanilla Linux kernel rather than the factory kernel used in the Yocto builds. Unfortunately that kernel is a release candidate. Ideally, the Edison should boot using the latest stable kernel, which at the time of writing is the 4.0 series (I think 4.0.3, but who’s counting).

Ionic and OpenWrt are constantly being updated to use the latest kernels, so this page focuses on the changed/patches necessary to get a 4.0 kernel running on the Edison.

##Serial Console

In order to get the serial console working, the High Speed UART DMA features from the 4.1 kernel is necessary. The drivers/dma/hsu builds fine with the 4.0 kernel, so this is pretty straight forward.
